Explaining Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain

Endometriosis is a painful condition caused when cells from the lining tissue of the womb, called the endometrium, become attached to organs in the pelvis such as:

  • Ovaries
  • Ligaments that support the uterus
  • Bladder wall
  • Rectum or back passage

Diagnosis is often difficult as the lesions are typically small in size and can be easily missed by clinicians without specialist training.

Drug Therapy for Endometriosis:
GP's and non specialist gynaecologists tend to favour treatment with hormones. Whilst easy to prescribe, this type of drug therapy has a number of problems

  • Hormones will only suppress the condition.
  • Hormones are not always effective.
  • Hormone side effects can be unpleasant.

At CEPP we only prescribes hormone therapy after very careful assessment and detailed discussion with our patients.

Surgical Therapy for Endometriosis:
Many of our patients have had previous surgery, where the subtle signs of the condition may have been missed. The specialist laparoscopic surgeons at CEPP have extensive experience in the detailed diagnosis and surgical management of endometriosis.

At CEPP we only recommend surgical diagnosis and treatment after very careful assessment and detailed discussion with you.
